Namaste!

Talk on January 14 2010 by Captain R Gurung
I attended a very interesting presentation given by Captain Ramprasad Gurung of the 1st Royal Gurkha Rifles sponsored by the Insurance Institute of Folkestone, Canterbury & East Kent, held at Castle House in Folkestone.

Captain Gurung gave a fascinating insight into how the Gurkha regiments came about, the history of the Gurkhas and of the geography and people of Nepal. Also he informed us about many aspects of the Nepalese and Gurkha traditions.

The 1st Battalion is due to be deployed to Afghanistan in a few month's time.

A Taste of India
On October 17 2009 I attended a fantastic event in Bidborough, Kent organised by the Rotary Club of Tunbridge Wells.  Their project, called ‘A Taste of India’, was to raise funds to create two new classrooms at Gaon Pharka Primary School, in the Syangja District of Nepal, a remote village in the Himalayas.

An evening of colour, fun, Indian dance, fabulous Indian fashion show, jewellery, and the decoration of the village hall, lots if information on the diverse nature of India, and the reason for the event itself, wonderful food provided by the local Himalayan Gurkha Restaurant, owned  by Major Damar Ghale MBE (a retired Major of the Gurkha Regiment) was all brought together
in an entertaining evening for 140 people.

I am delighted to report that under the incredible guidance and hard work of Ruby Jag-Nathan, an amazing £2,400 was raised!

Major Yam Gurung, President of the Rotary Club of the Himalayan Gurkhas in Katmandu gave a speech congratulating and thanking the Rotary Club of Tunbridge Wells for their efforts in this fundraising project to build two classrooms for the poor and deprived children in the Syangja District.

Major Yam Gurung and his Rotary Club will be overseeing, supervising, and monitoring the building of these  two classrooms. A huge ‘thank you’ to all concerned!
