Who am I?
My name's Annie Watsham and my connection with the Gurkhas began 12 years ago when I trekked in the Nepali Himalayas for a British charity called Whizz-Kidz. I contacted Joanna Lumley, as I knew her father had served with the Gurkhas, and asked her to sponsor me, which she very kindly did.
Nine years later I met Peter Carroll in my local town of Cranbrook in Kent, where he was campaigning for Gurkha justice and where I signed the petition. He asked advice on how to get more coverage in all areas for the Gurkha Justice Campaign and I suggested that he get in touch with Joanna Lumley to further promote the campaign and to get more coverage in the newspapers and on TV.
Unbeknown to me he did this and it wasn't until May 2009 that I realised that newspapers and TV companies were searching for the 'mystery woman' - Peter Carroll wanted to thank me for my input! This lead to meeting Joanna Lumley in person in Cranbrook and much media coverage including TV and radio.
Since then I have been invited to many Gurkha events and occasions. In June 2011 I was interviewed by Nina Gurung, who is both the wife and daughter of a Gurkha for www.gurkhas.com website and for general information to Gurkhas everywhere which will be shared with Nepali TV viewers. More recently I have spoken at the Nepalese Embassy in front of Dr Chalise about bridging the gap between the communities in Nepal and the UK, attended a Garden Party to celebrate Nepalese ladies attaining their first qualifications in English, have taken part in a sponsored walk for RAN (Rural Assistance Nepal), attended and spoke at the launch of the new www.gurkhasseekjustice.com Campaign and had a fantastic day near Ashford, Kent celebrating with Limbus from all over the UK!
Other events include meeting up with the members of UBGEA, a charity event to create two new classrooms for a primary school in the Syangja District of Nepal, hosted by the combined Rotary Clubs of Tunbridge Wells and Rotary Club of Katmandu, a Deepawali party, the UBGEA Christmas party and the launch of an initiative in Ashford, Kent to teach the Gurkha ladies good English!
